Austin Sherbanenko is a los Angeles based fashion designer who runs the brand Odyn Vovk. He is a self taught, passionate perfectionist who works and lives out of his warehouse in Los Angeles with a small dedicated team of designers. Everything is designed in the warehouse along with being produced and refined there as well. Austin has complete control over each piece from beginning to end. His collections are off beat from the mainstream apparel market and show off detailed cuts and heavy textured fabrics such as leathers and canvas.
Odyn Vovk translates from Ukrainian to English as “Lone Wolf”. The meaning behind the name is based on Austin’s grandfather who left Ukraine to come to America after working in German Nazi camps. “It’s this idea of hunting to maintain your existence, doing anything to survive and anything for your family, too. But that relates to my story as a designer as well, starting out in this business alone, figuring things out on my own and doing most of it myself. I definitely didn’t want to create this brand concept or design for someone else. I wanted to learn by myself and not have any kind of guidance, with someone telling me what was right or wrong. I wanted to figure out what was wrong myself.” It’s easy to see why the brand stands out among many. It is different in its own right and does not have a set path. Austin describes his work by stating, “My work reflects on my youth and being inspired by anything that sparks my curiosity. The collection is designed without the structured direction that a hard lined story would offer. I have a much more spontaneous approach. Ideas pop into my head and I follow the ones worth following.”
